Paper widths

58 mm vs 80 mm vs 4-Inch Thermal Print Formats

Match the document to the printer’s usable print width. A roll’s nominal size describes the paper; it does not guarantee that the entire width can be printed.

Compare nominal widths before choosing a layout

58 mm and 80 mm are common receipt-roll widths. Four inches converts to 101.6 mm and provides more nominal width. The supplied files are labeled 4-inch; their 1321-pixel width alone does not set the physical print width in a browser or driver.

  • 58 mm: use short rows and stacked item details.
  • 80 mm: allow more room for descriptions and aligned amounts.
  • 4-inch: use a compatible printer and its actual print-area specification.
  • For every size: verify roll compatibility and available printable width.

Paper width is different from printable width

For the Epson TM-H6000IV, the technical guide lists 72.0 mm printing width on 80 mm paper and 50.8 mm on 58 mm paper. Other models have different specifications. Use your model’s measurements rather than copying those numbers as a universal rule.

Reflow a wide template for a narrower roll

Move quantity and unit price below the item name, shorten optional labels and keep the amount column readable. Give long names their own line. Shrinking the entire 4-inch PNG to a 58 mm roll can make text and scan codes too small to use reliably.

Test the complete bill on actual paper

Check the longest product name, largest amount, final total, barcode and QR code. Confirm the footer is retained and test scanning the printed code. A good screen preview cannot confirm hardware margins, print darkness or paper-feed behavior.

Illustrative bill calculations

Check the numbers before printing

Both previews show six item amounts: ₹265 + ₹175 + ₹116 + ₹28 + ₹140 + ₹42 = ₹766. They use sample date 6 October 2026. The invoice and receipt have different tax presentation and payment status; compare them as separate design examples.

Invoice: displayed figures leave ₹298 due

Invoice: displayed figures leave ₹298 due: amount reconciliation
Item subtotal₹766.00
Discount−₹16.00
CGST plus SGST+₹48.62
Round off−₹0.62
Calculated charges before payment₹798.00
Payment allocated−₹500.00
Calculated balance due₹298.00
Balance printed in preview₹250.00

The preview leaves ₹48 unexplained. If a different tax interpretation or adjustment was intended, make it explicit and recalculate the bill. This arithmetic check does not validate the sample tax rates or tax treatment.

Epson TM-H6000IV technical reference

This model’s guide distinguishes paper width from printing width: 80 mm paper has a 72.0 mm print area; 58 mm paper has a 50.8 mm print area. These are model-specific examples, not universal dimensions.

Thermal printing questions answered

Are these templates for 58 mm or 80 mm printers?

The supplied designs are labeled 4-inch, approximately 101.6 mm nominal width. They are not native 58 mm or 80 mm layouts. Reflow text and columns to the actual printable width of your printer instead of shrinking the whole preview until its text becomes unreadable.

Why is printable width smaller than paper width?

The print head and printer margins can leave unprinted space along the roll edges. Printable width depends on the printer model and paper configuration. Read the model specification and use that width for text columns, logos, barcodes and QR codes.

Can I print these PNG previews directly?

You can open and print a PNG using a compatible printer driver, but pixel dimensions do not establish physical paper size. Choose the correct roll size, inspect scaling and margins, and run a test. For real bills, generate a document from your own transaction data and verify that all text and totals remain legible.

Why is my thermal invoice cut off or too small?

A mismatch between layout width, driver paper size and the printer’s printable area can crop a document or shrink its text. Match the roll and driver settings, remove unwanted browser headers and footers, and test the actual print area with long item names and the largest totals you expect.
