A point-of-sale (POS) system records sales at the counter. When it is connected to inventory, every sale also reduces stock, so the numbers on screen match what is on the shelf without anyone updating them by hand.
At checkout, identify the product and quantity, review charges, confirm the actual payment and issue the appropriate document. Record the stock movement once. For a return, decide whether the item is resalable before increasing available stock; a refund and a physical return are separate events.
Many small shops start with a computer or tablet and a phone camera for scanning. Busy counters usually add a USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner, a receipt printer and a cash drawer. Check which devices a POS supports before buying hardware.
Close each day by reconciling cash and card totals against the POS sales report, reviewing returns and discounts, and checking the low-stock list for tomorrow's orders.
