Spreadsheet, calculator or inventory software?

Use a spreadsheet for a repeatable report with controlled source data. Use individual calculators to check a formula or a purchasing scenario. Use inventory software to maintain product and transaction records; verify the specific reports, export fields and integrations you need before choosing a plan. Start with one SKU and reconcile the result against its source records.

How My Inventory Items supports this workflow

  • App dashboard summaries for stock, low stock, sales and receipts.
  • Free turnover, ABC, aging and reorder-point tools.
  • Worked formulas that separate entered-data calculations from app summaries.

Annual turnover and inventory days

Illustrative annual COGS of USD 120,000 and average inventory at cost of USD 30,000, using a 365-day year.

Annual turnover and inventory days: inputs and results
Annual cost of goods soldUSD 120,000
Average inventory value at costUSD 30,000

Days inventory outstanding91.25 days

120,000 ÷ 30,000 = 4; 365 ÷ 4 = 91.25 days. Do not divide revenue by inventory cost and call it the same turnover measure.

Inventory analysis: the metrics and tools that matter

Inventory analysis means using your stock, sales and purchase data to decide what to buy, how much, and when — and what to stop stocking. These are the core analyses every inventory management analysis tool should cover, with the formulas so you can check the numbers yourself.

Inventory turnover and days of inventory

Inventory turnover = cost of goods sold ÷ average inventory value for the same period and cost basis. Days inventory outstanding = days in the period ÷ turnover; use 365 only for an annual calculation.

Turnover describes a period, not the stock currently available for one order. Compare like periods and product categories before interpreting a change.

ABC analysis

ABC analysis ranks products by a selected value measure, such as annual consumption value or revenue. Choose explicit cumulative thresholds for A, B and C. An 80/20 split is a planning heuristic; your actual product distribution determines the groups.

Inventory aging and dead stock

An aging report groups stock by how long it has been on hand — commonly 0–30, 31–60, 61–90 and 90+ days. Stock in the oldest bucket is at risk of becoming dead stock: items with no sales over a set period. Find it early so you can discount, bundle or return it before it loses all value.

Reorder point, safety stock and EOQ

Reorder point (ROP) tells you when to reorder: ROP = (Average daily sales × Lead time in days) + Safety stock. Safety stock is the buffer for demand spikes and late deliveries; a simple version is (Maximum daily sales × Maximum lead time) − (Average daily sales × Average lead time).

Economic order quantity (EOQ) tells you how much to order to minimise ordering plus holding cost: EOQ = √(2 × Annual demand × Cost per order ÷ Holding cost per unit per year).

Other inventory KPIs worth tracking

Depending on your business, add these to your dashboard:

  • Stock value — quantity × unit cost, by location and category
  • Sell-through rate — units sold ÷ units received in a period
  • Stockout rate — how often items are out of stock when customers want them
  • Carrying cost — storage, capital, insurance and shrinkage as a % of stock value
  • Shrinkage rate — loss from theft, damage and errors as a % of inventory
  • Gross margin by product — which items actually make money

Spreadsheets vs inventory analysis software

The My Inventory Items app dashboard presents stock, low-stock, sales, receipts and fulfillment summaries. The separate free calculators help evaluate turnover, ABC categories and reorder points from entered data. Their calculations are not evidence that every metric is calculated automatically in the app.

Inventory Management Analysis Tools: Free Calculators & Guide: questions answered

What are inventory management analysis tools?

Inventory management analysis tools use stock, sales and cost data to help you decide what to reorder, which products hold excess cash and how efficiently inventory sells. Common methods include ABC analysis, turnover, inventory aging, GMROI and reorder-point analysis. My Inventory Items provides stock, sales, receipts and fulfillment dashboard summaries; its free calculators separately evaluate turnover, ABC categories, reorder points and other metrics from entered data.

Are all free calculator metrics automatically calculated in the app?

The app dashboard and free browser calculators are separate workflows. Dashboard summaries include stock, sales, receipts and fulfillment. Use the linked calculators for their defined inputs and confirm any additional reporting requirement with support.

Is 80/20 a guaranteed ABC distribution?

No. An 80/20 split is a heuristic, not a measured fact about your catalog. Rank your selected value measure, choose explicit cumulative thresholds and calculate the actual category distribution.

Is My Inventory Items available on a free plan?

Yes. The current Free plan includes one store and 5 documents per day, with all document types and PDF download and print. Email sharing, thermal printing and barcode labels are paid-plan features. See pricing for current terms.

How much do paid plans cost?

The current Starter plan is INR 299 or USD 4 per month and includes two stores and 25 documents per day. Pro and Business offer higher limits. Use the pricing page to compare currencies, limits and included features.
