Frequently Asked Questions

What is profit margin?

Profit margin is the percentage of the selling price that is profit. Formula: (Selling Price − Cost Price) ÷ Selling Price × 100. A 30% margin means 30 paise of every rupee earned is profit.

What is markup percentage?

Markup is the profit as a percentage of the cost price. Formula: (Selling Price − Cost Price) ÷ Cost Price × 100. Markup is always higher than margin for the same product.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Margin is profit as a % of selling price; markup is profit as a % of cost. Example: cost ₹100, sell ₹150 — margin = 33.3%, markup = 50%. Confusing the two leads to under-pricing.

What is a good profit margin for retail?

It varies by industry. Grocery retail may target 2–5%, clothing 40–60%, and software 60–80%. Compare to your industry benchmark to know if your margin is healthy.

Does this include GST in the calculation?

This calculator works with the prices you enter. For GST-inclusive selling prices, use our GST Calculator first to extract the base price, then use this tool to find your margin.

Is the profit margin calculator free?

Yes, completely free. No account needed. Use it as many times as you like.
