For a shop, inventory is usually the largest investment after rent. Good retail inventory management means the right products are on the shelf when customers want them, with as little cash as possible tied up in stock that does not sell.
Every sale, return, delivery and adjustment should update stock straight away. That is the main advantage of retail inventory software over a notebook or spreadsheet: staff can check availability before promising a customer, and you see low stock before the shelf is empty.
Give each product variant a distinct SKU and verify the manufacturer barcode against that exact item. Scanning can assist lookup, but test the device, symbol and software with your real labels. Confirm product, unit and quantity before recording a sale.
Set reorder points for steady sellers. For seasonal and fashion items, buy against a forecast and plan markdowns early; holding last season's stock costs more than selling it at a smaller margin.
Count high-value and high-theft items often with cycle counts, require a reason for every manual stock adjustment, and compare expected versus counted stock per category. Patterns in the differences show where the losses happen.
