3 × 12 = 36 units. Scanning a carton label three times does not establish a 36-unit count unless the pack conversion is explicitly configured or entered.

Barcode inventory workflows use a decoded label value to identify a product. A scan, product lookup and confirmed stock movement are separate steps. Use this guide to prepare identifiers and test the receiving, sale and counting behavior you require.
Barcode inventory software uses a scanned value to look up a product record. Decoding a code identifies a value; finding the right SKU and recording the intended quantity are separate checks. A successful scan by itself does not prove stock changed or the customer paid.
Most businesses set up barcode inventory in five steps:
Use identifiers appropriate to the trading channel and product. For externally traded retail goods, consult GS1 requirements before assigning a GTIN or creating EAN/UPC labels. Internal Code 128 labels can encode your own SKU, but do not make it a registered retail identifier.
A phone camera can help you test the free barcode scanner. Dedicated scanners may suit a busy counter, but compatibility depends on the device, barcode type and workflow. Test a real printed label, including its product mapping, before purchasing hardware.
Use these as evaluation criteria and confirm the capabilities your workflow requires with the provider before committing.
Duplicate or inconsistent codes can map a scan to the wrong product. Assign a unique SKU to each sellable variant and reconcile the opening count. Record manual corrections with a reason and review their history; requiring scans does not remove the need for controlled adjustments.
